Riot Games announced earlier that it would be laying off 530 employees worldwide, or about 11% of its workforce.
Those laid off will receive at least six months of salary, and those with long enough service will receive a higher severance package. Of course, Riot will also provide transition support in terms of employment and visas.
Along with the downsizing, management has also decided to shut down the Riot Forge publishing brand, which licensed the League of Legends IP to third parties.
"Through Riot Forge, people can see what happens when Riot people work with their favorite indie developers." CEO Dylan Jadeja and co-chairman Marc Merrill wrote in a letter to gamers, "but now it's time to refocus on internal initiatives."
Riot Forge will officially be shut down when Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story launches on February 22nd. Meanwhile, card game Legends of Runeterra will be downsized due to lower-than-expected revenues, and resources will be focused on more popular game modes.
